When Okello Honester Francesco joined Empowering Ugandans’ computer training program in April 2023, he had never touched a computer before. But what he lacked in experience, he more than made up for in determination.
Honester had completed high school (Senior Four), but like many young people in Uganda, he faced limited job opportunities without technical skills. Still, he dreamed of building a better future. “I always wanted to understand computers,” he said. “Not just for entertainment but to use them in a way that could really help my country”
From day one, Honester was eager to learn. He started with the basics. How to type, create documents, navigate software, and soon mastered Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. He learned to send emails, join video meetings, and back up files through Google Drive and Google Photos. By the end of the course, he had even written a professional CV which is something he had never thought possible before.
His hard work paid off. Shortly after completing the training, Honester was accepted into the Uganda Police Force, where he’s already applying his new digital skills in meaningful ways. “People rely on me to help with computer tasks like organizing files, collecting information, even handling digital evidence,” he shared proudly.
But for Honester, this is just the beginning. His dream now is to continue growing his knowledge of technology and one day give back by teaching others. “This is powerful training,” he said. “Every Ugandan should have these skills. Most jobs now require it.”
